Plant Watering Guidelines

Keep these guidelines in mind when watering.

  • Plants installed in areas with high light levels will need more water, more so if they are in direct sunlight or if the air is very dry or hot.
  • High light levels are often accompanied by heat so these areas will need to be watered more frequently.  In the summer, doors and windows are left open or air conditioners are turned on.
  • Plants sitting in warm windows could burn, plants near air conditioning vents could suffer cold damage, and plants in air-conditioned spaces in general could require more water because the air is so dry.
  • To maintain a plant that is in a tank system, allow the tank to dry out, and allow the soil to dry down to the point that the plant would normally require watering if it were not on a tank system.  Fill the tank and lightly water the surface of the medium to prevent the medium from pulling away from the sides of the pot.
Certain high moisture plants should not be allowed to dry back.  These include: Rhapis palms, Birds of Paradise, Golden or Black Bamboo, and Podocarpus.
