Scanmask

Horticultural Scanmask™ is a solid mixture which contains living nematodes, Steinernema feltiae.  It is a biological control most often used for fungus gnat control, however it is also effective against cutworms, root maggots, and grubs.  The solid carrier material protects the nematodes from drying out and sunlight while it slowly releases the living nematodes into the surrounding growing medium.  It also allows accurate measuring of the material.

Note: Keep Scanmask  away from children and pets.  Scanmask™ is harmless to people, pets, and plants by ingestion or injection. However, the packaged product is not intended for direct human consumption.

  • Do not expose Scanmask  to direct sunlight.
  • Store it in the refrigerator at 38 to 42° F. Keep the contain cool when transporting it.
  • Do not freeze!
  • Scanmask  can be stored in the refrigerator for an additional 4-5 months beyond the “use by” date on the container.  Do not exceed a total storage time of 6 months from the date on package.
  • Do not store Scanmask in airtight containers; the nematodes need air to survive which is why the container has holes.
  • Do not use more Scanmask that recommended in the directions. This does not increase its effectiveness. A teaspoon of Scanmask contains about 52,000 nematodes so the small amount added to the grow pot will contain plenty of the organisms.
  • When the container is empty, rinse the plastic container and dispose it in a trash receptacle. Do not reuse container.

To use Scanmask:

  1. Pre-moisten the plant so the growing medium is damp but not wet.
  2. Using a clean spoon, carefully mix the contents of the Scanmask container.  This ensures a good distribution of nematodes in the carrier material.
  3. Carefully measure the amount of Scanmask.

    4 inch pot:
    use ¼ teaspoon

    6 inch pot:
    use ½ teaspoon

    8 inch pot:
    use ¾ teaspoon

    10 inch pot:
    use 1 teaspoon

Larger sized pot diameter: use ¾ teaspoon for every eight inches of pot diameter; for example, a 16 inch pot would use 1 ½ teaspoons.

  4. Apply evenly over growing medium surface.
  5. Mix the contents into the growing medium to ensure the nematodes are well distributed and are protected from sunlight and dryness.
  6. Add sufficient water to the plant to thoroughly moisten the mixture and help release the nematodes into the growing medium to depth of about 2 inches.
