The name Aloe is probably derived from the earlier Arabic word alloeh or the Hebrew word allal, both meaning “bitter.” Aloe is often called medicine plant or burn aloe because it is widely known for the healing properties of its sap.  It grows in clustering rosettes of stiff, upright leaves. It is shallow-rooted. Aloe is a succulent and stores its water in its leaves.  During its dormant season, the plant uses very little water.

A. barbindensis is the botanical name for the commonly known Aloe vera.  It has long green leaves.

A. aristata is a small aloe that has dark green leaves with stripes across the width of the leaves.

South Africa

Maintenance Tips

The root system is shallow, so bear this in mind when checking soil moisture. Use turgor pressure to determine whether the plant needs water. If the plant is warm to the touch and feels soft or pliable, it is time to water.

During the growing season, water well then allow plant to dry back before watering again.

During the dormant season, allow plant to dry back, then water lightly.

Reduce watering in the non-growing season to prevent root rot.  Allow the plant to dry out, then water lightly.

Likes bright light for a good portion of the day.
