Areca Palm

Areca Palm
Chrysalidocarpus lutescens
Light Level: Medium
Water Level: High
The Areca Palm is often used as screening because of its low dense shape. Its petioles (leaf stems) arch outward and downward from the main stem. The leaves are a medium green and the stems a golden color.
Chrysalidocarpus is Greek for “golden fruit,” and lutescens means “becoming yellow,” both of which are appropriate names because Areca Palms tend to become chlorotic.
Country of Origin
Madagascar
Maintenance Tips
Once Areca Palms start turning yellow, it can be difficult to bring the color back. These plants benefit greatly from occasional top dressing with Fafard and additions of granular controlled release fertilizer to prevent or delay chlorosis. However, be careful not to pile soil against the stems or problems with color or growth will occur. Keep the foliage dry and clean.
Arecas grow faster if they get some shade, especially in the afternoon.
Overwatering weakens the roots and reduced color, so let the plant dry slightly between waterings.Pests and Problems
Spider mites will attack this plant, especially in bright light. Fungal leaf spot. Well-fed Areca Palms are more resistant to leaf spot disease. Those grown in high light conditions are at risk of leaf spot.
