This is a tough plant that survives in extreme heat and low light that would be deadly to other plants. It also tolerates cool temperatures, but will not survive when exposed to very cold air.

It is a slow-growing, long lasting plant.  With proper care, plant will bloom in spring; dark purple, bell-shaped flowers appear on the soil surface.

Maintenance Tips

Reduce water and keep the plant cool during winter, during its dormancy.  Keep plant out of drafts.

Keep the soil barely moist and irrigate less, especially in winter.

lace out of direct sunlight.  Will tolerate low (reading level) light. This plant does well under a north window. Aspidistra tolerates one of the lowest minimum light requirements of any foliage plant.

Pests and Problems

Spider mites. Poor drainage, too frequent watering, or standing in water will cause root rot. 

Colletotrichtum is a fungal leaf spot disease characterized by white spots and brownish leaf and petiole margins on Aspidistra.
