False Aralia

False Aralia
Dizygotheca elegantissima
Light Level: High
Water Level: Medium
The genus name Dizygotheca means “double receptacle,” for the four-celled anthers on the flowers. The name of elegantissima refers to the plant’s elegant appearance. The juvenile foliage has a lacy and delicate looking appearance. The mature foliage becomes larger with a broader, lobed leaf; somewhat like a brown, lobed version of Shefflera. This foliage change is normal for this plant.
Country of Origin
Polynesia and South Pacific, New Caledonia
Maintenance Tips
Over time, the foliage tends to become thin towards the bottom of the stems. This is partly due the natural shedding of older foliage. Leaf drop may be reduced under brighter light conditions.
This plant does not like to be too wet or too dry. Keep moisture levels even to prevent leaf drop from drought or root rot.
Pests and Problems
Spider mites, two-spotted mites.
Scale and mealybugs.
Yellowing on the tips of older leaves may be caused by a magnesium deficiency. Root rot occurs from overwatering, and can cause severe browning and dropping of older leaves, especially under warm conditions. Look for reddish brown threads connecting the fallen leaves to the top of the growing medium.
