Zamia

Zamia, Coontie Palm
Zamia floridana
Light Level: Medium
Water Level: Low
Zamia is a Cycad rather than a true palm. It has stiff feather-like fronds that are attached to a thick short stem. New fronds uncurl from the top of this stem. The leaflets are green and glossy. The males produce cones that look like cream-colored corn cobs and the female produces flowers that look like cabbage heads when the plants are over 10 years old.
Country of Origin
Florida and southern Georgia, United States
Maintenance Tips
Yellow leaf drop and leggy growth is usually caused by underwatering. Root rot will occur if plant is overwatered.
Remove yellowed fronds at the base of the stem.
Wash leaves occasionally with plain water. Do not use Brand-X or leaf shine on these palms.
Pests and Problems
Poor drainage, too-frequent watering, or standing in water will cause root rot.
Spider mites can be a problem if humidity is too low.
